My paintings dwell in the space between evocative romantic landscape and weathered industrial artifact. Consisting of multiple layers of transparent pigment on stainless steel, they conjure the natural world and invite the viewer to celebrate the Romantic idea of Nature as source of the numinous and sanctuary from the mechanized world. Alternatively, with steel bolted to backing and the paint surface scoured, these works serve to remind that the Romantic view of "Nature as Sanctuary" is no less manufactured than the industrial matrix which separates us from it.
Originally from the plains of Western Canada, David Ivan Clark graduated from Princeton University in 1983. Curators from the Whitney Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum, and the Denver Art Museum have included his work in shows at various venues in the western states. A self-taught painter, his work is in over one hundred collections throughout North America.
