My primary focus over the last few years has been to paint my observation of change within nature. For instance, the puddles a heavy rain makes on a road, the delicate red tone of light at the close of the day or leaves settling on the surface of calm water. The time I spend observing these effects on my natural surroundings are part of my artistic process. I sometimes cause my own changes to my environment like throwing a rock into water and watching the differences that the size or shape of the rock have on the rings generated. I photograph the moment and form it into a painting.
During the painting process I use color and thick paint so that the close-up view of each painting is abstract and textural but stepping back it evolves into realism. I think this gives the viewer a chance to experience two approaches to image making – abstract and realism.
